Bad data can be worse than no data. Discover how strong data quality management protects insights, resources, and business decisions.
In this age of data being everywhere, businesses treat all their information with the same seriousness as cold, hard cash or the stockroom. But too many organisations have a bad habit of forgetting that data is only as useful to you as it is trustworthy. When it's wrong, incomplete, a mess or way outdated, the insights that come from it aren't just a waste of time; they can actually be downright hazardous.
Tim Berners‑Lee has been saying for years that "bad data is worse than no data at all", and that warning feels more true now than ever in 2025. When you're making decisions in real-time, using AI and putting your faith in the insights, getting the data quality right is a must. This article looks at why bad data is more of a problem than the data not ever existing in the first place, shows just how costly dodgy data can be and gives you some proven strategies and emerging ideas to help your organisation get to grips with data quality.
Good data is the kind that is accurate, complete, consistent, makes sense and is on time with no duplicates. The people who work with data call these attributes the building blocks of data quality. Data quality management is the way that all these processes, roles and tools come together to make sure the data is up to scratch from the very beginning. To do that properly, you need to be profiling the data to spot the trouble, cleaning it up to get the errors out, keeping a close eye on it all the time to make sure it stays good, and putting in place some structures that people have to follow so that there's no confusion.
It's a high-stakes game. A recent Gartner survey showed that companies lose an average of US$15 million per year because of bad data quality, and some might even lose as much as 10-20% of their revenue; that's a staggering amount. 77% of people who work with Data say they have to deal with problems with the quality of the data & 91% say that poor quality makes things worse.
According to a report by Precisely, 64% of organisations picked poor data quality as their biggest challenge for 2025, and 67% admitted they didn't trust their own data completely. That's seriously undermining analytics, the work you do to stay compliant & your whole AI strategy. As Lior Solomon of Drata put it rather nicely: "Data is the lifeblood of all AI – without data that's secure, compliant & reliable, then all your AI initiatives will fail from the word go".
When data is wrong, decisions based on that data are wrong too. A mis-typed customer address in a CRM might seem trivial until it propagates into thousands of records across marketing, sales and billing systems. Multiply those errors across millions of rows and the impact is existential. Bad data means lost revenue, regulatory fines, operational inefficiencies and reputational damage. Missed opportunities and wasted resources from bad data add up to millions of dollars in losses.
History is full of painful lessons. In 1999 NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter disintegrated because the mission software mixed up metric and imperial units, costing $327.6 million. Thirteen years later, Knight Capital Group lost $440 million in 45 minutes when a software flag misfire flooded the market with unintended trades. Bad data isn’t just expensive, it can be fatal.
Beyond high-profile disasters, bad data quality sucks productivity. Inadequate quality erodes trust between departments, makes analysts spend hours cleaning data instead of getting insight and delays projects. Flawed data undermines operational efficiency, increases costs, regulatory risk and corrupts analytics. No data may slow down decision-making; in high-stakes situations, no data can be safer than relying on bad numbers. Charles Babbage said “Errors using inadequate data are much less than those using no data at all” but the modern interconnected business world shows the opposite: bad data spreads misinformation faster and farther than silence.
Bad data is pernicious because it spawns false confidence. Flawed figures masquerading as intelligence lead executives to stand behind badly conceived strategies, waste dollars, and pursue vaporware ventures. Errors in one system soon spread to others: a bad field can replicate into marketing lists, ERP systems, and data lakes, forcing teams to spend long hours reconciling incompatible versions of the truth.
Faulty information erodes trust; analysts start doubting all reports, customers lose confidence when bills are wrong, and morale suffers. And it even attracts legal problems. Flawed reports can violate privacy laws and result in expensive fines. In the age of machine learning, the consequences are even greater: AI models that have learned from biased or incorrect data carry those flaws at scale. In brief, no data makes you suspicious, but poor data puts you on the wrong track with certainty. It is for this reason that data quality management is not optional for any contemporary organization.
Effective data quality management relies on governance, a tough culture, and processes. Data quality must be championed by top management, who must designate data owners and stewards. A chief data officer can perhaps align data quality management programs with business strategy and broker resources. Clearly defined context‑aware metrics along accuracy, completeness, and timeliness dimensions give everyone a shared view of what "good" is.
Profiling, cleaning, and deduplication utilities detect and fix errors at scale. Automated warning and lineage validation with live monitoring keep pipelines healthy. And last, but not least, building a culture of stewardship, educating employees to enter data correctly, sharing stories of the price of mistakes, and reminding everyone that data perish with time makes everyone responsible for quality.
The data quality landscape is changing fast. According to Digna’s 2025 trends prediction, AI will be front and center. AI-driven data quality solutions not only detect anomalies in real time but also predict issues before they occur. This predictive capability means you can have cleaner data sets with minimal human intervention. The evolution of Data Quality as a Service (DQaaS) means cloud-based solutions for profiling, cleansing and validation so you don’t have to invest in infrastructure.
Another trend is the adoption of single data observability platforms that bring together application, infrastructure and data level visibility. These platforms provide real-time data health visibility by tracking data lineage and quality metrics across systems and enable faster remediation. Companies are moving from generic measures to context-aware data quality metrics that consider the end use of the data. An online retailer for example, would prioritize inventory accuracy, a healthcare company would value patient record completeness.
Data governance is also becoming real-time. Real-time data governance applies policy at the moment the data is being created, using automated enforcement, ongoing monitoring and lineage tracing. In support of accountability, companies are creating data contracts between producers and consumers that specify the quality, format and timeliness required. Finally, low-code and no-code tools are democratizing data quality management so non-technical users can monitor and improve data quality and institutionalize quality practices across the enterprise.
It all starts with taking stock of where you stand with your data at the moment - and that means profiling your key datasets to track down duplicates, missing values, and everything else that's out of place. Next, you need to drill down on what exactly you want to achieve from your data quality efforts - and tie those goals in with business objectives like keeping customers from abandoning their baskets or meeting government rules. What's key here is to set up metrics that make sense for your business - and are actually going to get you somewhere.
Getting governance right is crucial: appoint someone to run the show, set up a data governance board, and sort out who is responsible for what, so you can start to put some order into the chaos. To make it all work, bring in some data cataloging and profiling tools, which can also spot data issues in real-time - and in 2025, some of those tools will be driven by AI, making it easier than ever to sort out problems before they even arise. And it's not just about one-off fixes - you need to build a culture that sees data quality as an ongoing concern, with training, data contracts, and continuous monitoring to keep things on track.
Data's an asset that's going to outlast just about anything else, so it makes sense that getting it right is absolutely crucial. Trouble is, in 2025, with all the scrutiny of regulators and the hype around AI, companies just can't afford to be messing around with sub-standard data anymore. Bad data is like a silent assassin - quietly corrupting decisions, wasting cash, and undermining trust. It's the right answer: data quality management that sorts your data out and makes it something you can trust.
By getting governance right, setting up some clear definitions, and putting a few automated tools in place, you can be sure your data is telling the truth. That way, you not only avoid the usual disasters, but you start to let the real power of data and AI shine through. Without data, you've got opinions - but without good data, it's the opinions that won't be doing the damage.
