Challenge

On Feb 2, 2014 Coca‑Cola aired a Super Bowl ad featuring people of various ethnicities singing “America the Beautiful” in their own languages. Immediately after the airing an intense backlash erupted across Twitter and other social platforms and continued for days and weeks. The core problem was to understand what offended and angered people, why the ad triggered such strong reactions, and whether the negative reaction would damage Coca‑Cola’s brand equity. The stakes were high: unchecked negative PR could erode brand equity and translate into real business loss, so the brand needed timely, accurate insight to assess impact and inform response.

Proprietary solution

listening247 harvested social posts around the campaign and applied its proprietary AI social‑listening and text‑analytics platform (with sentiment accuracy claimed >80%) to compare sentiment before and after the airing. The approach combined large‑scale social listening, sentiment analysis and text analytics to surface what people were saying, quantify shifts in tone and identify the drivers of negative reaction so the brand could understand and respond to the issue.

Result

During the 8 days prior to the Super Bowl there were 139,997 English‑language posts about Coca‑Cola: 22% Negative, 7% Positive and 71% Neutral. In the 8 days following the ad the volume increased by 169% to 376,382 posts. Despite the surge in volume the share of negative posts remained at 22% while positive posts rose to 51%. The number of neutral comments remained roughly the same in absolute terms (~100,000), but its share fell from 71% to 27%. Analysis showed the negative comments about the ad provoked many passive readers to speak up in defense of Coca‑Cola; in many channels the negative reaction to the negative comments was larger than the original negative commentary. In short, the incident produced a large volume spike but ultimately coincided with a net increase in positive social support.
