Attention as Foresight: From Next Word to Next World

How do you predict what a trend will mean, and for whom, before the group holding it even exists? We tracked one signifier, 'raw', through 278 Nextatlas outcomes and a hand-kept archive since 2012 — from food, to wellness, to libertarian raw milk, to brutalist design, to today's anti-algorithmic posting. LLMs guess the next word. Foresight has to guess the next world.

Key Takeaways:

1. Extensional and intensional signal move independently, track both

2. Antonym velocity moves faster than the term itself, Pay attention to what a signifier refuses.

3. Meaning is carried by actants: humans, microbiomes, algorithms, regulators, all at once.
