The research sought to map how psychological need satisfaction and need frustration relate to work engagement and team‑boosting behaviours in South African workplaces. A key operational challenge was reaching the targeted quota of respondents aged 55–65, a hard‑to‑reach older demographic that required flexible recruitment methods. The stakes were high: Our client needed a representative sample and reliable insights into team dynamics so findings could meaningfully inform academic conclusions and potential organisational interventions to improve engagement and team functioning.
TGM Research ran an online polling/opinion survey in South Africa (N=350) using its online data‑collection capability and quota controls. TGM applied targeted recruitment and flexible quota management to secure the 55–65 age group and ensured age and gender quotas were met. The survey instrument captured measures of psychological need satisfaction, need frustration, work engagement and team behaviours, and TGM delivered the cleaned dataset and analysis to the university.
TGM successfully met the study quotas (including the 55–65 group) and delivered a complete dataset (N=350). Analysis uncovered noteworthy patterns in team‑boosting behaviours, for example, prevalent actions such as storytelling and taking initiative, and clarified how need satisfaction and frustration influence engagement. These insights gave the University clear, empirically grounded findings about workplace team dynamics in South Africa that can inform further research and practical interventions.
