Question 1

When should in-product experiments confirm stated preference results?

Accepted Answer

Run in-product experiments to validate survey preferences when you're making a high-stakes decision and need proof that what customers say aligns with what they'll actually do. Stated preferences (from concept tests or customer surveys) are great for hypotheses, but before fully committing, smart teams test those insights in the real product environment. For example, if survey respondents claim they would prefer a new feature enough to pay more, you might A/B test different pricing or roll out a beta version with that feature to see if behavior changes (e.g., higher upgrades or engagement). Use these experiments when the survey finding is surprising, counterintuitive, or could significantly change your strategy - basically anytime you want to double-check "will they really?" under real conditions. By confirming stated preferences with actual user behavior on a small scale, you avoid costly missteps and gain confidence that your moves are grounded in reality, not just intentions.

Question 2

How should enterprise research support account-based marketing programs?

Accepted Answer

Enterprise research can support account-based marketing (ABM) by equipping the marketing and sales teams with deep, account-specific insights that drive personalized strategies. Instead of broad market stats, researchers focus on understanding each target account's unique situation: for example, analyzing each target account's industry context and pain points (e.g. gleaned from news, financial reports, or even customer reviews) that the ABM campaign can address. Research can also gather intelligence on decision-makers within the account - what are their priorities or strategic initiatives (often through social media analysis or expert interviews)? Armed with this, marketing can tailor content and value propositions that resonate precisely with that account. Additionally, enterprise research monitors the impact of ABM efforts: measuring sentiment within those accounts to see if brand perception or awareness is shifting, and feeding that data back to refine the campaign. In short, research turns ABM from guesswork into a data-driven approach - ensuring that every message or offer in the program is backed by evidence about what that account cares about, which significantly boosts credibility and effectiveness.

Question 3

How can AI-powered cameras provide reliable insights into shopper behavior?

Accepted Answer

AI-powered cameras provide reliable insights into shopper behavior by continuously and objectively analyzing how people move and interact in a store, far beyond what manual observation can capture. Computer vision algorithms interpret video feeds to track metrics like foot traffic patterns, how long shoppers dwell at displays, and which products they pick up or put back. Trained on vast examples of in-store movement, the AI can consistently recognize behaviors (like pausing at an endcap or comparing items on a shelf) without getting tired or biased. This yields hard numbers on which areas of the store draw the most attention or where bottlenecks occur. Retailers typically validate the system by comparing AI camera data with sales or in-person observations to ensure the insights are accurate. For example, a camera analytics report might show that 60% of shoppers who picked up a new product from a display spent over 30 seconds examining it — an indicator of strong interest. In the end, AI-powered cameras turn video into data, enabling evidence-based decisions about store layout, merchandising, and staffing based on real shopper behavior.

Question 4

When is it smarter to use case studies instead of surveys for niche B2B?

Accepted Answer

For very specialized B2B (business-to-business) audiences, it often makes more sense to conduct in-depth case studies instead of broad surveys, especially when potential respondents are few or hard to reach. In niche industries, a survey might yield too few responses for reliable statistics, but examining a handful of representative companies or scenarios in detail can uncover rich insights. Through case studies, researchers can explore the context behind decisions, challenges, and outcomes — learning not just what happened, but why — which a simple questionnaire can't fully capture with a tiny sample. For example, rather than surveying 20 niche tech firms with a generic form, it may be smarter to dive deep into 3 or 4 of them, mapping out their unique experiences. That qualitative depth yields practical learnings that help guide strategy in similar niche contexts, something a skimpy survey might not deliver.

Question 5

How should we handle family accounts and shared devices in sampling?

Accepted Answer

Sampling needs to account for family accounts and shared devices by distinguishing individual respondents to avoid skewed data. If multiple people use the same account or device, surveys should include a question to identify who is responding (for example, capturing age, gender, or role in the household) so you know which individual's data is being collected. For instance, if a streaming service account is shared by a family, you might target only the primary account holder for feedback or include a survey question asking which family member is responding. In practice, researchers often limit one response per household or use unique links and screening methods to ensure each participant is unique; the key is to implement measures that either prevent duplicate entries from the same device or clearly separate household members in analysis, ensuring a shared account doesn't accidentally count as multiple respondents and bias the results.
