The estimated gross value of global agricultural production is over $5 trillion dollars, and over 600 million family farms are thought to generate 70% to 80% of that value. The size of the industry makes it an attractive target for marketers, although several factors create challenges. Larger industrial producers represent concentrations of volume and in some ways are easy to identify and engage, but the vast number of smaller producers dispersed across rural areas can be much harder and costlier to target. Variability of production over time due to factors such as weather or changes in climate impact spending, and the seasonality of planting and harvesting means that agricultural producers are often unavailable for market research for months at a time.
